A forewarning that I will sometimes write posts that exceed the Gmail character limit. If you want to get around this and see the ends of them, just read the posts on Substack. Additionally, Substack’s automated messages tells me, “Readers can click on ‘view entire message’ and they’ll able to view the entire post in their email app.”
One reason you might want to do this, even if you don’t have the time to read an entire post, is that the footnotes of course come at the end. I don’t use footnotes to be cute, or to add length; I use them because I am discursive by nature. They are usually something that I very much want to say, but that I think might have distracted from the rhythm of the rest of the piece if contained in the main body. They give me a little more flexibility.
You might suggest installments instead of pieces that go over the e-mail character limit. I tried that on another site and didn’t feel it was satisfactory. I felt it tended to dampen readership. However, if my “notes” go over, I will send them in a Part I and Part II. I’m not sure what the difference is.
My apologies for a procedural post. However, if I continue to add subscribers, it may need to be reprised every so often.
I've come to learn that Substack will lie to you sometimes (I think particularly when there are photos involved) and tell you a post is too long for email, and then you make all the apologies for length, only for the whole post to show up in the email anyway.
I skirt the email length limit with almost every post I make, so I run into this issue a lot.
